Translation: (Scene 2) Kalou stepping into a car surrounded by photographers. Voiceover: “There is movement in the case of Salmon Kaou, but the footballer himself refused to give any comment.”

(Scene 3) Reporter standing outside government building: “Salmon Kalou is in this building this afternoon, picking up his passport. Unfortunately his advisers have instructed him not to give any comment.”

(Scene 4) Two Ivory Coast newsreaders: “Salomon Kalou will be going to the World Cup 2006, but won’t be playing for us.”

(Scene 5) Football reporter in the studio: “The football news, in and outside the country, is that Salmon Kalou will be getting his passport.”

(Scene 6) Presenter at World Cup 2006: “The World Cup final. Holland vs. Germany is about to begin and the atmosphere is really fantastic.” “And there is Kalou on the German side.”

(Scene 7) Immigration Minster Rita Verdonk sitting on her sofa watching the game with her husband. (The premise behind the advert is that Verdonk will probably need to have insurance, because she refused to fast-track Kalou’s Dutch citizenship application to enable him to play for Holland during the 2006 World Cup.)

(Scene 8) German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn lookalike: “It’s really super that Kalou is playing with us now. Thank you, Holland. Thank you, Rita.”

Ivory Coast-born footballer Salmon Kalou, whose protracted attempts to gain Dutch citizenship have been much reported in the country's media, won a court battle to have this advert withdrawn. The commercial was made without his permission by the Dutch insurance company Centraal Beheer Achmea. A judge in The Hague ruled that the advert had to be taken off the airwaves, and every time this ruling is breached the company will face a fine of 50,000 euros. During the court proceedings Kalou’s lawyer, Ruud Schutte, told the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad: “He is portrayed as someone who is just after money when the complete opposite is the case”.
