Adjudication of the Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland:

Complaint:
A poster advertisement for Tiger Beer entitled 'By The Neck' was the subject of objections. The poster depicted a reclining man naked from the waist up and a woman holding his neck with one hand and the open blade of a 'cut throat', shaving razor to his throat in the other hand. The depictions were accompanied by two pictures of the product over the strap line 'By The Neck'.

One complainant observed that while the woman would appear to be shaving the man, he did not have any shaving cream on his face and felt that it gave the impression that it was acceptable behaviour to drink Tiger Beer and hold a knife to another person's throat. Another complainant felt that the advertisement was extremely violent in nature and therefore offensive; that holding a razor to anyone's throat in a public advertisement was not acceptable. This complainant wondered what was the connection between the illustration and drinking Tiger Beer. The third complainant got the impression that the woman was about to cut the man's throat and found the advertisement to be offensive and giving out wrong messages.

Conclusion:
Complaint upheld
